Facebook mobile ad revenue doubles in fourth quarter

(Blank Headline Received)

SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook Inc doubled its mobile advertising revenue in the fourth quarter, a sign that the No.1 social network is seeing early success in expanding onto handheld devices as more of its users migrate to smartphones and tablets.
Investors want to see evidence that CEO Mark Zuckerberg's 8-year-old company is delivering on promises to develop a full-fledged mobile advertising business, a challenge facing many of today's technology leaders including Google Inc .
But the growth trailed some of Wall Street's most aggressive estimates. Shares of Facebook were down roughly 3 percent at $30.21 in after-hours trading on Wednesday, regaining ground after falling more than 8 percent immediately after the numbers were released.
Mobile revenue estimates among some analysts and investors were unreasonably high, said Sterne, Agee & Leach analyst Arvind Bhatia.
"As a result the stock was set up for disappointment," he said. Overall, he said, Facebook's results were encouraging.

The company's overall advertising business grew at its fastest clip since before its May initial public offering, helping the company's revenue expand 40 percent and surpass Wall Street targets.
Facebook has rolled out a wide variety of new services in recent months as the company seeks to stay ahead in the fast-moving Web market and to convince Wall Street that it can turn its audience of more than 1 billion users into a sustainable business.
Zuckerberg said the company plans to spend heavily to recruit talent in 2013 as the company pushes forward with new product development, particularly "mobile-first" services.
"We aren't operating to maximize our profit this year but we're doing what we think will build the best service and business over the long term," Zuckerberg said during a conference call with analysts on Wednesday.
The strategy makes sense for an Internet company, said Stifel Nicolaus Jordan Rohan. But it will force Wall Street analysts to "ratchet down" their profit expectations.
"The conference call was a bit of a sobering event," said Rohan. "The company advised analysts and investors to expect lower margins, and downplayed the near-term opportunity for revenues from Gifts," Facebook's recently-launched online commerce service.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
Facebook shares, which lost more than half their value following a rocky IPO, have regained ground in recent months as concerns about its mobile ad business and insider selling have eased. Shares have surged roughly 60 percent since mid-November.
Zuckerberg said that recently introduced products such as Gifts, which allows Facebook users to purchase retail goods for their friends, as well as its new social search tool could become important businesses in the future. But in the near term he said that Facebook's advertising efforts will be the core of its business.
The number of monthly active users on the social network reached 1.06 billion at the end of last year, with 618 million daily active users, Facebook said. But much of that growth again came from emerging markets like Asia, rather than the United States or Europe, where revenue per user is several times higher. For instance, average revenue per user is $13.58 for the United States and Canada, but just $2.35 in Asia.
Overall fourth-quarter revenue came to $1.585 billion, up 40 percent versus $1.131 billion a year earlier. Analysts were looking for revenue of $1.53 billion.
Executives said some revenue from its payments business dating back to September 2012 had been booked in the October-December quarter, inflating the number somewhat. Excluding those deferred sales, overall revenue would have been up just 34 percent in the quarter.
But it was the fledgling mobile business that dominated Wednesday's discussion on the call. Finance Chief David Ebersman said Facebook had "basically doubled" mobile ad revenue from the third quarter to the fourth quarter.
"Two quarters ago we really had no mobile revenue," Ebersman told Reuters in an interview. "In the course of a pretty short period of time, we've dramatically ramped up our ability to monetize mobile."
Facebook said net income in the fourth quarter was $64 million, or 3 cents a share, compared to $302 million, or 14 cents a share a year earlier.
Excluding certain items, Facebook said it earned 17 cents a share, compared to the 15 cents a share expected by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Facebook expects expenses -- excluding stock-based compensation for employees -- to jump 50 percent in 2013, likely outpacing revenue growth. Capital investments may climb to $1.8 billion, up 14 percent from last year's $1.575 billion.
"They're going to have to continue to develop new products, which will cost them," said Bhatia of Sterne, Agee & Leach.
But he said, "the market would be less happy if they were not finding enough opportunities."

Women seek their place in sun at World Cup AFP

The women's World Cup opens in Mumbai on Thursday with the cricketers hoping to put aside memories of an unsettling build-up and gain recognition in a country where the men's game reigns supreme.
Barely a week before the start, the International Cricket Council was forced to revise the schedule because of security concerns surrounding Pakistan's participation in Mumbai where the entire tournament was to be played.
All group B matches, featuring Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, were shunted to the cricketing backwaters of Cuttack following threats from the right-wing nationalist Shiv Sena party to disrupt matches in Mumbai.
Pakistan will remain in Cuttack if they qualify for the second round, but will still have to travel to Mumbai if they make the final at the Braboure stadium on February 17.
Indian captain Mithali Raj said she was disappointed that the Pakistani team had attracted protests.
"I personally feel that politics should not be involved in sport," Raj told AFP.
"Sport is more about entertainment and a fun-loving atmosphere. So we should not be getting too many political issues into it."

Preparations were also disrupted when the hosts made Mumbai's Wankhede stadium, venue of the men's World Cup final in 2011, unavailable at the last minute.
Three grounds in Mumbai will host group A, involving defending champions England, Sri Lanka, the West Indies and hosts India.
The players have taken the disruption in their stride and are excited about the tournament, which was first played in 1973, two years before the men's World Cup was inaugurated in 1975.
"I think it is safe to say that the women's game today is unrecognisable from when I started in 1997," said England's captain Charlotte Edwards, set to appear in her fifth World Cup.
"We are attracting loads of young girls who want to play the game. We have changed people's perceptions about women's cricket a lot. Hopefully this tournament will be another step in hammering that message home."
One of the players to watch in the 10th edition of the tournament will be England wicket-keeper Sarah Taylor, who reports say could play alongside the men in Sussex county's second XI this year.
India's Raj, preparing for her fourth World Cup, hopes women's cricket will finally take off in her country where some of her male counterparts are national icons.
"Indian society is still is not forthcoming when it comes to women's cricket," Raj said.
"Parents are still more interested in putting their girls into more feminine sports like tennis or table-tennis."
Australia go into the tournament as favourites to win their sixth title, following victory in the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka last October.
The Australian side includes Ellyse Perry, a pace bowler who also plays football for her country, the Indian-born Lisa Sthalekar, and Alyssa Healy, niece of former Australian men's wicket-keeper Ian Healy.
Pakistan are more worried about adapting to the new one-day rules than about their security in Cuttack, where they are staying in the club house of the Barabati stadium for security reasons.
"We have not played under the new rules where five players have to be inside the circle at all times and the use of new balls from both ends," captain Sana Mir said.
"We must get used to them before the tournament starts."
Three teams from the two groups will advance to the Super Sixes round, from where the top two will qualify for the final.

YouTube preparing to offer paid subscriptions this year, report

SAN FRANCISCO - YouTube, the video website owned by Google Inc , plans to offer paid subscriptions to some of the content on its site later this year, according to a media report.
YouTube has reached out to several video producers, asking them to submit applications to create for-pay "channels," according to a report in AdAge on Tuesday that cited anonymous sources.
The first such channels could be available to consumers by the second quarter for between $1 a month and $5 a month, AdAge reported.
YouTube, the world's No. 1 video website, has been moving to add professional-grade video programs to the vast archive of amateur, home-shot videos that made the site popular. The current crop of such channels is available to consumers for free and supported by advertising that appears alongside the videos.

YouTube has hinted in the past that it was considering offering subscription-based paid content. YouTube boss Salar Kamangar told Reuters in June that there was strong demand among certain YouTube video producers, such as video game networks, to offer fee-based programs.
"They have such a big audiences that they can start to segment their audiences into those that are willing to pay a higher amount" for things like new gaming tricks, Kamangar said at the time.
He also said that cable channels with small audiences could potentially be offered to consumers through YouTube on an "a la carte" basis.

After early success, Yahoo Mayer faces rising bar

SAN FRANCISCO - Six months into her tenure, Yahoo Inc Chief Executive Marissa Mayer has arrested the decline of the Internet portal and has won favor on Wall Street with stock buybacks, but a longer-term turnaround remains uncertain.
Her promise on Tuesday of a modest revenue uptick in the coming year paled in comparison with the growth of its Internet peers. And Yahoo shares, which have gained roughly 30 percent since Mayer took the reins in July, fell nearly 3 percent to $19.77 on Tuesday.
"All in all it seems like they're off of life support," said Michael Binger, a senior portfolio manager at Gradient Investments. But "I still see it as kind of a second tier-search company, a good display company. I still struggle to see the new avenues of growth."
Mayer, 37, who was Google Inc's first female engineer, warned investors on Monday that fixing Yahoo was a long-term project. She outlined a plan to overhaul a dozen of Yahoo's top websites, with the goal of enticing users to spend more time on them and consequently boosting ad revenue through a "chain reaction" of growth.

For investors already satisfied with the stock's recent gains, waiting for Mayer's chain reaction may not be worth the time and risk.
"You can get to $20 with just share purchasing and selling Alibaba stake, basic execution and keeping costs low. Now to drive it further, you've got to fix the properties," said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis.
"The road gets a little harder," said Gillis.
The fact that Yahoo is competing against such dominant Web companies as Google, the world's No. 1 search engine, and social networking giant Facebook Inc , makes the challenge all the more daunting.
STREET CRED
The product-focused strategy draws on Mayer's strengths in designing some of the most popular online services at her former employer, including Gmail and Google's famously sparse search engine homepage.
She is widely admired in Silicon Valley for her Web product savvy, though some analysts and investors have cautioned that she has never before led an entire company as CEO.
So far, Mayer has earned high marks in her debut as CEO, with analysts and investors pointing to early accomplishments such as recruiting high-profile executives and boosting morale.
"She comes from a culture that has motivated people to be innovators," said Michael Yoshikami, CEO of Destination Wealth Management, which does not own Yahoo shares.
He said Mayer's "street credibility" should buy her more time with Wall Street as she strives to turn Yahoo around.
"When a new CEO comes in, they have one or two quarters before they have to start showing something. I think she's going to have a year-and-a-half, maybe even two years," said Yoshikami.
Roughly 700 million users still visit a Yahoo website every month - putting it in the top ranks globally. But the amount of activity people engage in on many Yahoo sites, such as its email service, is steadily declining and its smartphone offerings are deemed lackluster.
By contrast, Facebook has created one of the most popular smartphone apps.
Mayer has said her top priority is to create a coherent mobile strategy for Yahoo and that she intends for at least half of the company's technical workforce to be working on mobile products.
The company acquired mobile app developers Stamped and OnTheAir during the quarter, but turning development talent into revenue is the challenge she has yet to address.
Mayer's handpicked finance chief, Ken Goldman, told investors on Monday to expect profit margin pressure in the first half of the year as Yahoo invests in product engineering and marketing to "lay the foundation" for revenue growth in the second half of the year.
And he noted that Yahoo was not through returning capital to shareholders, following the company's $1.5 billion in buybacks in the fourth quarter.
That's been good enough for many investors in Mayer's first six months at Yahoo. The next six months may not be so easy.
"Every area they go into someone is already doing it, probably better," said Binger, of Gradient Investments.

Nokia axes dividend to save cash for Lumia push

A Nokia Lumia smartphone is pictured in a shop in Warsaw

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia plans to axe its annual dividend payment for the first time in the company's recorded history to shore up its cash position against falling sales and buy time for a turnaround.

While cost cuts and asset sales have given the struggling company breathing space to keep marketing what many call its make-or-break Lumia smartphones, analysts said it was far from a recovery and was still falling behind Samsung and Apple in the smartphone race.

Nokia has slashed one in three jobs and has sold off assets including its company headquarters under Chief Executive Stephen Elop, who was hired from Microsoft in 2010 and promptly tied the company's fortunes to the untried Windows Phone operating system made by his former employer.
"We believe we removed the cloud of liquidity concerns," Elop told reporters on a conference call.
Nokia, which earlier this month announced it had returned to underlying profitability for the first time in a year, said the suspension of the dividend, which cost 750 million euros last year, would give it "strategic flexibility".
Nokia said it had paid a dividend every year since 1989, but didn't have records for earlier periods in its history, which goes back over 100 years.
The company ended the year with net cash of 4.4 billion euros, down 22 percent on a year earlier, but up on the previous quarter and above the market estimate of 3.4 billion, mostly due to a turnaround at Nokia Siemens Networks , its telecom equipment venture with Siemens .
It has also been making better use of its rich portfolio of technology patents, earning royalty payments from other technology companies. It also received $250 million from Microsoft in the quarter in return for using Windows Phone.
Some analysts have said Nokia could soon take NSN public, which would secure even more cash to keep the company running. Elop said all options were on the table for NSN's future.

LOST IN TRANSITION?
Elop is under intense pressure to show he made the right decision in February 2011 to drop Nokia's own operating system in favour of Windows Phone. He has said it would take two years for a successful transition, and that period is almost over.
"They have had two transition years now, and this year will be yet another one. The ramp-up continues. It has been way too slow," said analyst Mikael Rautanen from equity research firm Inderes.
Some investors have said Elop will need to change strategy or even leave if Nokia is unable to turn the company around. Some of the more optimistic investors cite Nokia's history of reinventing itself. It faced bankruptcy in the 1990s before it shifted to cellphones from toilet paper and rubber boots.
Nokia sold 4.4 million Lumia devices in the fourth quarter, including the new Lumia 820 and 920, which were launched in November and use the latest Windows Phone 8 software. Analysts estimate Nokia's market share in the high-margin smartphone business is only around 5 percent.
Many said quarterly sales of Lumia phones need to rise to around 10 million, with gross margins of around 20 percent, to convince investors that its smartphone strategy is working.
Supply constraints have weighed on Lumia sales, but Elop said the company was "making progress" in resolving them. He declined to specify what parts or suppliers were causing problems, but sources have cited chip shortages.
Non-smartphones still make the bulk of Nokia's revenue, but margins are thin, and analysts believe Nokia needs a successful smartphone offering if it is to survive. Its fourth-quarter sales volumes of other mobiles fell 15 percent to 80 million units, with the average selling price down 3 percent.
While Nokia's feature phone Asha has proven more popular than initially expected, analysts say that even consumers in emerging markets will eventually shift to smartphones so they can access the Internet to upload photos and go on social networking sites such as Facebook.
Some said the Lumia's recent launch in China and India could help restart growth, though it faces stiff competition from Samsung there.
Telecoms executives in Europe and the United States have said they want Nokia to succeed, to keep Samsung and Apple's power in check, but analysts have said there were few signs the two were losing their lead.
While Apple's results overnight fell short of expectations, it still shipped a record 47.8 million iPhones in the December quarter.
"It doesn't look like Apple would start losing their volume strength in any remarkable way," said Pohjola analyst Hannu Rauhala.
Nokia shares were down 8.3 percent at 3.20 euros at 1445 GMT. They had risen 70 percent over the past three months, but were also the most shorted among the euro zone's blue chips ahead of the results.

Singer Janaki refuses to accept Padma Bhushan

Chennai:Expressing dissatisfaction over the number of people from South India figuring in the Padma awards list for 2013, southern playback singer Sreeramamurthy Janaki Friday refused to accept Padma Bhushan award announced for her on the eve of 64th Republic Day,
"I'm saddened by the fact that north India has been given more prominence than south India. I'm extremely disappointed and I refuse to accept the award," Janaki told IANS.
The 74-year old veteran made her singing debut in 1957 Tamil film "Vidhiyin Vilayattu". She has crooned over 15,000 songs in a career spanning five decades across all southern languages and in Hindi.
She has a long association with singer S.P. Balasubramanyam. The two have sung more than 1,000 songs together.

She has won four National Awards and the prestigious "Kalamamani" state award of Tamil Nadu.

Vishwaroopam gets overwhelming response in Kerala

Chennai: Kamal Haasan's "Vishwaroopam" opened to an overwhelming response in Kerala, but after the first screening, the film's run was stopped in several theatres following protest from Muslim groups. Trade insiders say it is a clean movie.
"The first screening of the film was at 11 a.m. in approximately 82 screens in Kerala. But the film had to be banned in several cinemas after the first screening. Theatres closer to Tamil Nadu-Kerala border had to stop screening since Muslim outfits intervened," Arvind Nambiar, a distributor, told IANS.
"It's a clean film and is not targeted against any group or community. People should watch and decide for themselves whether it has any scenes that hurt the sentiments of any community," he added.
The shows were disrupted in places like Palakkad, Ettumanoor and some other towns of Kerala.
"There was no buzz around the release of the film as most of the cinemas decided to screen the film at the last minute, which was this morning. Since it released in smaller sections such as B and C, there were no problems initially, but later on the situation aggravated," Nambiar added.
The Tamil and Telugu versions of "Vishwaroopam", which deals with the adversities of war, were scheduled to release Friday, but the Tamil Nadu government Wednesday imposed curbs on it following protests from Muslim groups.

A day later, Kamal challenged the ban by the state government in the Madras High Court. In his plea, he contended that the movie was cleared by the censor board and the state government could not ban it.
The court has suspended the release till Jan 28. A judge will watch the film and then decide its fate.
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government Friday stopped the release of "Vishwaroopam" in Hyderabad after some Muslim organizations complained that the movie hurt religious sentiments of the community.

Big boots to fill

The tall frame of Ishant Sharma could not be missed as the Indian team engaged in a game of football at the HPCA Stadium here. Also in the limelight were the athletic Ashoke Dinda, and the tireless Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shami Ahmed.

Change is the only constant in the Indian cricket team. Ishant would know that as he suddenly finds himself a part of a new pace pack.

There is no Zaheer Khan to mentor him as the left- arm pacer is on his last legs. As someone who has been groomed to take over the mantle from Zaheer, Ishant still has some way to go before he can be truly called the leader the attack.

Though he has made impressive strides towards that in the ODI series against Pakistan and England, consistency is one area where he would want focus.

In the last game in Mohali, Ishant was his best as he bowled with pace and rhythm, touching the 140kmph mark.

Kevin Pietersen was all at sea against him in Ishant’s first spell.

It has not been easy for Ishant since coming back from ankle surgery. “ He has taken time to find his usual pace.

But he has regained that in Mohali. He generated good pace and moved the ball.

When he does that, he will trouble batsmen,” said former player Navjot Singh Sidhu. In the three- match ODI series against Pakistan, Ishant took seven wickets at an economy of 3.71. Against England, he went for runs in the first ODI, but came back well in the last two matches.

He has bowled really well in this series. In the first 6- 7 overs, he has troubled the batsmen. Even though he has gone for runs in the last few overs, am happy with his performance, he is good fielder and is bowling those fivesix overs really well for us as first change with the semi new ball,” skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said after the Mohali match.

Ishant’s coach Shravan Kumar felt he has shown a mature head since coming back from injury. “ It takes some time to hit the right line and length,” Kumar told MAIL TODAY . “ He has more confidence in his ability. International cricket is tough and as a bowler you have to come up with new things to tackle the batsmen. He has been working on his outswingers also.” If anything, Kumar wants him to ball from closer to the stumps.

I would like to see him bowl from a bit closer to the wicket. It is easier to play the angled ball. But these things come with experience and maturity.” With his experience, Ishant would like to lead the attack by example.

Bhuvneshwar and Shami have impressed one and all, though these are still early days for them. With Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron nursing injuries, India would have a few options to pick from in the coming days.

Ishant needs to take this opportunity with both hands, for nothing is certain in Indian cricket.

Sri Lanka down Australia in opening T20 clash

Sri Lanka downed Australia by five wickets to win the opening T20 international at the Sydney Olympic Stadium on Saturday. Two towering sixes on consecutive balls from Sri Lanka's Thisara Perera sealed a comfortable win for the visitors, who have now beaten Australia in their last four T20s.

The win was set up by some superb bowling from Sri Lankan pair Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara, who earlier restricted the Australians to 137-3 from their 20 overs.

The Sri Lankans reached the target with seven balls to spare and are now guaranteed of retaining their number one ranking regardless of what happens in the second and final match in Melbourne on Monday.

Australia earlier won the toss and chose to bat, but apart from big-hitting opener David Warner they found scoring difficult.

The Sri Lankans always had the target well in hand, once openers Kushal Perera (33) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (16) put on 46 runs in 38 balls for the opening wicket.

Kushal, making his international T20 debut, showed no signs of nerves as he took to the Australian fast bowling attack with relish.

He outscored Dilshan, who was hit in the head by a Ben Laughlin bouncer and needed treatment for a cut above his eye.

Australia finally got the breakthrough when Dilshan fell to the spin bowling of Doherty, Laughlin taking a magnificent diving catch at point.

They struck again soon after when Kushal edged Maxwell to wicketkeeper Matthew Wade and Chandimal (5) was caught in the outfield by Ben Cutting off Maxwell.

Doherty then got the important wicket of Mahela Jaywardene when he bowled the former Sri Lankan skipper for just eight.

Angelo Mathews (35 not out) and Lahiru Thirimanne steadied the innings and got Sri Lanka back on track but on 104 Thirimanne slashed at a Mitchell Starc delivery outside off stump and was caught at backward point by Adam Voges for 20.

However, Mathews played patiently and kept the scoreboard ticking over to move the Sri Lankans to within striking distance, setting the match up for Perera's big hitting at the end.

Earlier, Warner played a lone hand with 90 runs off just 62 balls, blasting five fours and three huge sixes.

Voges was the next highest scorer with 25, while Kulasekara was the pick of the bowlers with 1-21 from his four overs.

Anonymous hacks US Sentencing Commission, distributes files

anonymous

Hacktivist group Anonymous took control of the U.S. Sentencing Commission website Friday, January 25 in a new campaign called "Operation Last Resort."
The first attack on the website was early Friday morning. The second - successful - attack came around 9pm PST that evening.
By 3am PST ussc, gov was down (it has since been dropped from the DNS), yet as of this writing the IP address (66.153.19.162) still returns the defaced site's contents.
It appears that via the U.S. government website, Anonymous had distributed encrypted government files and left a statement on the website that de-encryption keys would be
publicly released (thus releasing the as-yet unkonwn information held on the stolen files) if the U.S. government did not comply with Anonymous' ultimatum demands for legal reform.

Samsung to introduce Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet with SPen

Samsung is expected to introduce the HD display bearing tab with quad-core Exynos processor.

Galaxy Note 8.0

Samsung is quietly planning to introduce yet another Galaxy Note tablet in the coming weeks. The new Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5100 will come with an 8.0-inch, HD LCD display and will house a quad-core Samsung Exynos 4 mobile processor.
According to SamMobile, Samsung is working to bundle the S Pen stylus along with it as well. There are no details about the pricing and availability of this tablet as yet.
Samsung had introduced the Galaxy Tab 7.7 last year with nice display but it did not create a lot of excitement due to the high price. Now Samsung has planned to introduce a HD display bearing tablet that will fall under affordable tablet category. Most importantly, Samsung aims to compete with Apple's new gadget - iPad mini.

The next tablet in the Galaxy Note line up is touted to be Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5100 with S Pen and has been codenamed as Kona. This tablet will feature 8-inch Super Clear LCD display with 1280x800 pixel resolution natively. The Mobile Indian already reported about the Galaxy Note GT-N5100 model listing on GLBenchmark website.
The Galaxy Note 8.0 will house a quad-core Samsung Exynos 4 Quad 4412 mobile processor paired with 2 GB RAM. Samsung will offer Galaxy Note 8.0 in two models - WiFi Only (GT-N5110) and WiFi+3G (GT-N5100). This tablet will measure 7.95 mm and weigh about 330 grams - almost as much as the iPad Mini.
As per the report, Samsung has placed a 5 megapixel camera at the back for and 1.3 megapixel camera in the front of the tablet. The Galaxy Note 8.0 would come in 16 GB and 32 GB on-board storage option models and will feature a micro SD card slot which would be capable of holding up to 64 GB micro SD card. Other features include Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n) and GPS with A-GPS support.

Micromax to launch new Canvas smartphones every two month

Currently the Micromax is selling around 5,500 Canvas 2 handsets daily & have started testing Canvas 3.

Micromax to launch new Canvas handsets

Some companies never fail to surprise you. Micromax, an Indian handset player, is one such company. At a time when a handset manufactures usually don't bring sequel of their popular handsets immediately, Micromax is planning to bring a new handset under its popular Canvas series every two month.
Micromax's co-founder and business director, Vikas Jain said to The Mobile Indian, "Micromax Canvas II has been a hot selling smartphone for us and we plan to launch a Canvas smartphone every two months from now onwards."

He added, "We are currently selling around 5,500 Micromax Canvas 2 handsets daily and have started testing Micromax Canvas 3. I will not be in a position to share the exact time frame by when Canvas 3 will be launched. But do expect something around March."

Rohit, Raina clinch series for India

MOHALI: With one innings, the feelings that Rohit Sharma invokes among Indian cricket fans shifted from one extreme to another. On one extreme are the annoyances he causes: how poorly he had handled his early fame and success, and the bad habit of wasting the many chances given to him. Then, there are the bright sparks we saw today: the gift of sublime timing, the late dabs and glides square off the wicket, drives down the ground that makes your jaw drop, and the ability to absorb pressure in a big game. That last one you associate only with the best in the game.

Rohit’s innings of 83 today set up their chase of 258, with Suresh Raina finishing off the job in some style with a muscular 89. The five-wicket win gave India the series, helping them justify in some measure their inexplicably-claimed No. 1 rank despite the poor show against Pakistan recently.

It was a cold day in Mohali. The PCA Stadium emerged out of a thick coat of fog this morning to be ready just about in time for the fourth game of the series. India elected to field and one Mumbai player made way for another. Ajinkya Rahane has had plenty of chances this winter and has done little to repay the faith posed in him after being brought in as Virender Sehwag’s replacement. It meant that the other prodigal talent in the team — Rohit — finally got a hit. Meanwhile, Cheteshwar Pujara warmed the bench another day while his state side Saurashtra prepares for the Ranji Trophy final beginning on Saturday.

It’s amazing how much talent hides in the recesses of India's middle-order while their opening combinations stumble from one failure to another. Sehwag and Rahane’s failures aside, Gautam Gambhir has struggled to produce an innings of note for long. Today, he made 10 before nudging Tim Bresnan into Jos Buttler’s gloves. But Rohit has succeeded at the top of the order, and with the series sealed the Indian think-tank could consider the entirely radical idea of playing two part-time openers in the final game in Dharamsala. How else is Pujara going to get his chance?

ROHIT, RAINA SHOW THE WAY

Finn impressed but a bad habit cost him Raina's wicket.Dropped on 12 by Kevin Pietersen at cover, Rohit played some delectable strokes today. An on-drive and pull off Steven Finn, some clever footwork against James Tredwell and he was on his way. Tredwell brought England back with the wickets of Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh, but the innings by Raina settled matters.

Raina had a let-off when Finn had him caught at slip – except that the ball was called dead by umpire Steve Davis because the pacer had once again knocked the stumps in his delivery stride. Raina was on 42 at the time and it was a series-defining moment.

Finn has had this problem for long and the teams had agreed to the dead ball rule for this series for such cases. Alastair Cook was seen remonstrating with the umpire. The same umpire and bowler were involved in another such incident in last year’s Headingley Test where South Africa captain Graeme Smith was caught at slip but given not out for the same reason.

Finn was the best of England’s bowlers today, generating nice pace and bounce. He eventually dismissed Rohit – courtesy a dubious LBW decision by Davis when the ball seemed like it would fly past leg-stump. Tim Bresnan and Jade Dernbach disappointed. In batting-friendly conditions, Dernbach hasn’t found his line and length all through the tour and has offered easy runs to India – one reason why England are 1-3 down in the series with a game left.

ROOT, JADEJA IMPRESSES AGAIN

Earlier, Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen and Joe Root struck fifties taking England to what would have been a good score had their seam bowlers found their bearings. Pietersen struggled at the start of his innings. He was 2 off 23 balls and couldn’t get bat to ball with Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma bowling tight lines. But his innings blossomed, putting England on course of a late recovery.

Alastair Cook worked hard for 76 before being done in by a poor umpiring decision. The ball from Ravichandran Ashwin had pitched outside the leg-stump. It’s one of the many poor decisions in the series and is sure to revive the talk over DRS again.

Joe Root and Pietersen helped add 100 runs in the last 10 overs. Root, with the calmness and maturity of a veteran, struck his first ODI fifty off 43 balls. He is the one to watch out for in the England set-up.

Jadeja's spell in the middle overs gave India the advantage just when Cook and Pietersen had prepared themselves for an acceleration. In ODIs against England, the left-armer averages 48.2 with the bat and 19.89 with the ball. This bowling average drops to 15.9 in Indian conditions for the 19 wickets he's taken in 9 games against this team. So to all the people making fun of Jadeja on Twitter, you could train your guns on England now — they've single-handedly revived your favourite cricketer's career!
